Obviously the biggest neighbor to Texas is Mexico and a lot of Texans have friends and family they like to drive and visit in Mexico. Before you cross the Texas border into Mexico though, check your auto insurance policy and see if you’re even covered. Better yet, give your Texas insurance agent a call and get some answers.
Mexico Doesn’t Recognize Your Texas Auto Insurance Policy
For the most part, the Texas Department of Insurance reports that Mexico does not consider auto insurance policies written in the United States to be acceptable. To echo this point: When you drive from Texas to Mexico, or from any US state for that matter, you must have auto insurance with a Mexican insurance carrier. This means that if you are involved in a car accident in Mexico and caught without Mexico car insurance, you’re likely to become a criminal in a foreign country – not an easy challenge.
You may find that your Texas insurance policy might have some policy endorsements that allow you to travel up to a certain distance into the state, but beware, you might still be violating Mexico's car insurance laws.
Mexican Liability Insurance
There are a lot of qualified Texas insurance agents that are authorized to sell Mexican liability insurance policies. According to a handful of Mexican Insurance resources, a standard 100/300/100 policy will cost about $25 to $35 for week, or $250 to $350 for an entire year.
