Have you ever noticed that a lot of the car insurance companies that advertise on TV, tell you that you can buy your car insurance policy and get your proof of insurance immediately? Well that’s because having proof of insurance when you drive in California is required by law. There are so many times when people simply leave their proof of auto insurance at home buried in a big pile of mail or bills, only to ultimately lose it — it’s a very common mistake.
Whenever you are pulled over for any reason, whether you were speeding, made a “California stop,” or simply had a broken tail light, the CHP or local police officer is going to ask you for your drivers license and proof of insurance. If you don't have your proof of insurance, you are likely to receive a citation that is certain to have some kind of fine. Most likely, you are going to have to make a court appearance and show proof of insurance to the judge. In addition to the fines associate with failing to have proof of insurance, the court also adds additional fees. If it is determined that you didn't have car insurance coverage at the time of the citation, you make see your license suspended and require an SR 22 in the future.
If you can’t find your proof of insurance, call your California insurance agent, or try calling the carrier directly. You’ll probably need to provided your policy number (if you have it), or provide your social security number and personal information as a substitute. Insurance companies are generally very good at providing another copy of your proof of insurance, given that it’s such a common customer request.
